Sustainability in Business - The Role of Managed Forests

Sustainability in Business - The Role of Managed Forests

We make no secret that at Timbersmiths our love for wood and sustainability runs deep. We take pride in sourcing timber exclusively from responsibly managed forests. However, as a wood business, how do we reconcile the act of cutting down trees with our commitment to sustainability? We are fortunate to have Trinity Woods, a beautiful managed forest just outside of Axminster, right on our doorstep. It's our go-to local escape, a place where Molly (workshop) dog, can charge around and let off steam and where we unwind after a busy day in the workshop. Trust us when we say, if you've ever felt at sea with the world, a leisurely wander through the woods will work wonders for your soul. Not only will you literally see the wood from the trees, but you'll also experience the restorative benefits that nature has to offer.

Trinity Woods

In this blog we wanted to share the benefits of responsible timber sourcing and the importance of managed forests.

As a Nation we are equally enthusiastic about harvesting trees as we are planting trees. This is because unlike many other building materials, wood possesses unique qualities that make it a sustainable choice. Wood can be reused, repaired, and recycled in various ways, and it is also a naturally renewable resource.

In fact, the more trees we grow sustainably, the more we can responsibly harvest for building materials, leading to increased carbon dioxide (CO2) storage from the atmosphere. It's a natural and circular cycle that supports environmental balance.

To shed light on the numerous benefits managed forests offer we’ve drawn on the expertise of Forestry England, alongside other reliable sources, whilst highlighting why our commitment to sustainable timber aligns with a flourishing environment.

🌲Protecting Biodiversity: A Tapestry of Life

UK forests are rich ecosystems brimming with diverse plant and animal species. Managed forests, overseen by organisations such as Forestry England, play a crucial role in preserving biodiversity. By implementing sustainable practices, these forests provide habitats for countless wildlife species, ranging from majestic red deer to elusive pine martens. They are home to an assortment of birds, insects, and plant life, forming a tapestry of life that thrives in harmony with responsible forest management.

🌲Climate Change Champions: Carbon Absorption

As climate change continues to challenge our planet, managed forests emerge as unsung heroes. Trees act as carbon sinks, absorbing carbon dioxide and mitigating the effects of greenhouse gases. Sustainable forest management practices promoted by Forestry England maximise carbon sequestration, assisting in the battle against climate change. By supporting sustainably managed forests, we contribute to the UK's efforts to reduce carbon emissions and create a sustainable future.

🌲Sustainable Timber: Crafting a Greener Future

Sustainable forest management ensures the responsible and renewable production of timber. By sourcing our timber from sustainably managed forests, like those overseen by Forestry England, we guarantee that the wood used in our products is harvested with care for forest health and environmental impact. Embracing sustainable timber practices safeguards the longevity of forests, while also supporting local economies and communities.

🌲Nature as a Classroom: Outdoor Education

Managed forests offer more than just natural beauty; they also provide excellent opportunities for outdoor education and exploration. Forest schools, nature trails, and educational programs encourage people of all ages to engage with the natural world. Exploring forests fosters a sense of wonder, deepens ecological understanding, and nurtures a love for nature. From guided wildlife walks to forest crafts, these activities connect us with the environment while promoting learning and well-being.

🌲Wildlife Wonders: Forest Dwellers

Venturing into managed forests reveals a vibrant tapestry of wildlife. Keep your eyes peeled for the elusive red squirrel leaping from tree to tree or listen for the melodious song of the nightingale. Managed forests provide a safe haven for a wide array of wildlife, including badgers, owls, butterflies, and more. By supporting sustainably managed forests, we protect these habitats and ensure the preservation of diverse wildlife for future generations to cherish.

🌲To sum up....

We can all play a part in supporting the management of UK forests. By choosing sustainable timber products, reducing waste, and recycling wood, we make a positive impact. Supporting conservation organisations, engaging in outdoor activities, and advocating for sustainable practices also contribute to the cause. Additionally, participating in tree planting and reforestation efforts helps restore and protect our forests.

At Timbersmiths we committed to sourcing timber exclusively from responsibly managed forests to ensure that our products are not only beautiful but also environmentally friendly.
